Fokker Aerospace Group selected by Boeing Commercial Airplanes for manufacture of raked wingtips for the P-8A Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft (MMA)
23 June 2006
The P-8A MMA, based on Boeing's Next-Generation 737-800 commercial airframe, will replace the Navy's aging fleet of P-3C aircraft. Its mission will comprise anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, and both land and sea-surface intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance. The Navy plans to purchase 108 of the aircraft, scheduled to enter service in 2013.
Fokker Aerostructures, one of the Fokker Aerospace Group operating companies, has been awarded a contract that comprises the manufacturing of raked wing tips for five aircraft with an option for a sixth. A raked or backswept wing tip provides the same efficiencies as a Blended WingletTM, but increases overall performance for maritime patrol missions. The wing tips are of an advanced design, containing more than 50% Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP). First delivery will be summer 2007.
Vice President Marketing & Sales of Fokker Aerospace Group, Henk Valk stated: “Following the significant contract awards from Boeing to Fokker Aerospace Group for 737 wiring, 737-800 mission systems wiring, and 747 Large Cargo Freighter Engineering, we are delighted with the further extension of our relationship. We are also excited about the program’s potential”.
Fokker Aerospace Group develops and produces advanced components and systems for the aircraft and aerospace industry, and supplies integrated maintenance services and products to aircraft owners and operators. In 2005 the group achieved a turnover of € 551 million with 3,384 employees.
